"A
general is the safeguard of the nation. When this support is in
place, the nation will certainly be strong. When this support is
not in place, the nation will certainly not be strong." Sun
Tzu.
King
Philip II (Alexander the Great's father) once stated a lion leading
an army of sheep is more fearsome than a sheep leading an army
of lions. He realized a strong general could make the weakest
army strong, and a weak general could make the strongest army
weak. The organization's energy and attitudes are drawn directly
from the leader, for he or she is at the front where it is most
visible.
Thus,
be conscious about how you present yourself to your people...
your demeanor and behavior will be watched! Even in times of dire
straits, a strong leader brings the situation into perspective
and guides the people into doing the best things possible to ensure
continued viability.

"Perceiving
a victory when it is perceived by all is not the highest excellence."
Sun Tzu.
Leaders
do not merely imitate nor do they compromise. Most of all, they
do not blindly follow the crowd. They take a course of action
-- despite what is popular -- as it makes sense and calculations
were made. This is why leadership requires competence, confidence,
and the fortitude to withstand loneliness.
While
the masses vie against each other for the easy routes, the leader
is quietly willing to take on the most challenging of paths. In
the end, pioneers and contrarians reap the greatest benefits because
they thought things through and endured hardships to get to where
they want to go. It is the path many people say they want to take,
but few ever start... and even fewer finish.

"Therefore,
in night battles use torches and drums; in day battles use flags
and pennants. Drums, gongs, flags, and pennants are used to unite
men's eyes and ears." Sun Tzu.
Different
communication tools for different situations. Use the tools that
will give your people the clearest instructions. Even if half
of the people heard and took action because of your message, you
have succeeded -- their momentum will carry the others along.
Advertise
the behaviors you like in certain individuals and downplay the
undesirable behaviors in others. The purpose is to continuously
put in everyone's mind the norm: above the call of duty performance.
Create a winning environment and winning will become a habit.

"So
the principles of warfare are: Do not depend on the enemy not coming,
but depend on our readiness against him. Do not depend on the enemy
not attacking, but depend on our position that cannot be attacked."
Sun Tzu.
Sun
Tzu reminded us of something we all have complete control over:
ourselves. Even if we ignore everything else, we can remain safe
if we concentrate on our own progress and defense. The opponent
may know how to win, but he cannot necessary do it because we
have prepared for him.
What
this also means is we should never rely solely on outside factors
to help us. The chances of victory are greatly diminished because
these factors may be out of our influence and thus out of our
control. Be as independent as possible from others, and in turn,
more in control of your own destiny...

"If
one gains victory in battle and is successful in attacks, but does
not exploit those achievements, it is disastrous. This is called
waste and delay. Sun Tzu.
Once you have
achieved a victory, capitalize on the victory. Do not be nice.
Do not be mean. But do act like a leader. Push people continually
forward to capitalize on the present situation, whether the previous
result was a win or a loss. You will then achieve a string of
victories without giving thought to fame or pain.
You will be
praised by others but they do not make you haughty and arrogant.
When you forget yourself, you start to remember other people.
The truly successful individuals are the ones who fully realize
their genius when they are long retired. They die with no regrets
and proud of the contribution they made to society.

is priceless, it is an important part of my day. It always seems to
come at the right time, and when I need it most. This is one of the
best hidden gems."

specific passage from Sun Tzu, give an explanation of what it
means in our current terms, and offer examples of how it could apply
to actual situations we might encounter."

most useful aspect of the Sonshi Daily is the way you apply the teachings
