I still have this card. And silly me, I was actually naive enough to take the message of "[inspiring] those who follow to reach even higher" seriously. I try to do just that with Sonshi.com -- and anywhere I go and everything I do. One big reason I have this motivation was because Vanderbilt has the ability to inspire those like me. Vanderbilt is a relative small school, but it has a big heart.
A school is only as good as its people, especially the professors. If you attend our little get together on February 27, you can see one of them. His name is Bruce Cooil. In fact, he was voted the best professor in my business class when we graduated. His CV is super impressive and frankly he is a genius, but for me, Bruce is the best because he is also the nicest professor you'll ever meet.
You probably feel by now that I am gushing over my school. But I'm not the only one. ESPN's Skip Bayless (who is an alumnus of Vanderbilt) said many times on national television that Vanderbilt is the best school in the world.
I'm proud of how Vanderbilt, part of the SEC conference, keeps the academic requirement the same whether or not you are an athlete. Thus, any athlete who walks the campus can feel confident they are in the same league intellectually. So it's no surprise Vanderbilt has one of the highest graduation rates for student athletes in the nation. "Vandy," as students and we alumni affectionately call our school, prepares even pro-level athletes not for the next five years of their career but the next 50 years. It is an education that stays with them in mind and spirit long after their body has left them.
And even long after my graduation, Vanderbilt has kindly and graciously given me the opportunity to gather with all of my friends of Sun Tzu, my fellow brothers and sisters of wisdom. We've been doing this online since 1999. It's about time we do it live and in person. Lucky us, Vanderbilt would be an environment of not only higher learning but also with a lot of heart. I'm indeed returning home. Join me at my alma mater on February 27 -- the date is fast approaching -- and let's enjoy what I believe would be a memorable day together.
ADDENDUM: I hereby declare our annual Sun Tzu conference is a family event. Children are and will always be welcome without charge. Like Sun Tzu protected and put his nation first, we parents too protect and put our family first.
